Project/programme description:
ICTU works on a better digital government, for and together with other government organisations.For the NL Design System project, we are looking for Web Accessibility Specialist.
With the NL Design System approach, we gather guidelines, components and examples to build robust websites and web applications for the government. The core team does this together with an active community of specialists from various government organisations.
The components and guidelines of NL Design System are open-source available on GitHub and Figma, so that anyone can use them for an understandable, user-friendly and accessible online service.
What role does the professional have within the project/programme:
The assignment consists of maintaining and improving the NL Design System accessibility through documentation and test specifications for components, patterns and guidelines. In this way, you will contribute to the further development of this government-wide open source white-label design system.
NL Design System shares accessible solutions, with front-end code for various frameworks, designs in Figma and documentation written in Markdown and MDX. This includes test automation with JavaScript made available, test scenarios in Storybook and user testing. Within these frameworks, the professional will carry out the work for the assignment.
What task will the professional perform and what activities are associated with it?
The activities involved in achieving the mission are:
Preparation of documentation and guidelines based on the NL Design System architecture to support web editors, web developers and web designers on how to build or improve accessible and user-friendly websites and web applications;
Conduct research into existing use of components, patterns and templates within the government. This involves identifying best practices, user research and accessibility requirements so that they can be used as the basis of guidelines, test specifications and acceptance criteria for an agile development process;
Establish accessibility acceptance criteria for components, patterns and templates of NL Design System to avoid repetition of errors revealed by accessibility audits in previous projects;
Ppose test plans and test specifications that form the basis for test automation at components, patterns and templates;
Validate NL Design System components and patterns for accessibility based on available test scenarios, acceptance criteria, test specifications and WCAG 2.2 guidelines;
Conduct WCAG-EM accessibility audit on NL Design System's websites and templates;
Provide accessibility support during working days in coordination with professionals within the NL Design System project;
Provide demos and workshops on delivered work In coordination with professionals within the NL Design System project;
Establish acceptance criteria for deliverables in consultation with Product Manager, Design System Lead, or Project Manager become acceptance criteria;
Prepare refinements, sprint planning and demos in coordination with professionals within the NL Design System project and the NL Design System community;
Making accessible examples available as solutions to common problems. These solutions are designed for maximum reusability within a design system, with as little customisation as possible in the implementation context.
Desired profile
We are looking for an experienced Web Accessibility Specialist:
- The candidate has extensive experience in doing WCAG-EM audits
- The candidate has experience in frontend development
- The candidate will have experience working in a multidisciplinary team
- The candidate knows which accessibility issues often recur in content, house style and code
- The candidate is pragmatic and can translate WCAG success criteria into concrete solutions that can work in various front-end techniques.
- The candidate can clearly explain how to apply components in a user-friendly and accessible way. To developers, designers and content creators.
- The candidate has experience in writing blogs and documentation
- The candidate will have experience delivering workshops that help content creators, developers and designers meet accessibility requirements in their daily work.
- The candidate has good oral and written communication skills.
- The candidate works independently and monitors their own progress as part of the scrum planning.
- The candidate can switch well between different tasks to quickly remove barriers when necessary and where possible
- The candidate is accurate and works in a disciplined manner.
- The candidate can organise and prioritise own work in coordination with the Product Manager
- The candidate can work well openly and transparently
Job requirements
The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of and experience in at least 5 years out of the last 8 years:
- The application of WCAG accessibility requirements and technology such as WAI-ARIA
- Conduct WCAG-EM accessibility audits and report issues found
- Collaborate via issues/merge requests/pull requests with, for example, GitHub or GitLab
- Give workshops and presentations for content creators, developers and UX designers
- Writing documentation and weblog articles for content creators, developers and UX designers
- Frontend development HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Be able to provide a brief motivation, showing that: the candidate has a good oral and written command of the Dutch language - the candidate has a good written command of the English language - For each requirement, the candidate provides an explanation of how these requirements will be met - What concrete experience the professional has gained per wish that is relevant to this assignment at NL Design System, substantiated by the point score in the assessment - For each wish, the number of years/projects of concrete experience the professional has gained per wish in the context of this application.
- Wish: Experience in advising developers and designers for improving accessibility in various projects.
- Wish: Experience advising content creators on improving accessibility in various projects
- Wish: Experience in delivering comprehensive documentation around web accessibility in various projects. For example, in blog posts or knowledge base pages.
- Desire: Experience advising pragmatic solutions for 1 or more of the following techniques: React - Web Component - Angular - Vue.js - Drupal - WordPress - Typo3
- Desire: Candidate demonstrates pragmatic and solution-oriented approach.
